The Devshayani Ekadashi is important from all the other Ekadashi as it is believed on this day Lord Vishnu goes to sleep (Nidra Yoga) for four months, and he wakes up on Prabodhini Ekadashi. In the term Devshayani, dev means god and shayan means sleep, Lord Vishnu falls asleep in the cosmic ocean of milk on a bed made of sheshnag.

The Lord goes into Nidra Yoga for four months and Lord Shiva takes over the Universe’s responsibility. Lord Vishnu went to Patal Lok during this period as it is believed when Lord Vishnu took Vaman’s avatar, he gave King Bali a boon where he would stay in Patal Lok for four months.
