Driving Licence Rules 2024 – Eligibility Criteria and How to apply online?

The Union Ministry of Road Transport introduced new driving licence rules in India. Where the individuals need not appear for the driving test to get a driving licence. Individuals will need to clear a test and get training at a driving training centre.

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways has recently announced significant changes in the driving licence rules and it is set to take effect on 1 June 2024. These new measures aim to simplify and streamline the process of obtaining a licence making it more efficient and accessible for the average citizen. 

The new rules include stricter penalties for driving without a valid licence, with fines now reaching up to Rs. 2,000, and for minors caught driving the penalties are more severe, including a Rs. 25,000 fine and also a potential action against the parents as well as cancellation of the vehicles registration certificate. 

Aadhar card holders can update their information in their ID for free till the 14 June online. The users can simply update their Adhaar card offline by paying Rs. 50 for every update. This service is available only on my aadhaar portal till 14 June 2024. 

How to apply for a Driving Licence?

The new driving licence rules aim to streamline the process of reducing bureaucratic hurdles and promote the better trained drivers on the India roads.

By the expertise of the private driving schools and introducing stricter penalties. Before applying, you must know about the different driving licence.

  • A learner licence must have to apply for a permanent or a commercial licence but the new rule of driving licence in India is optional for the individuals.
  • Permanent driving licence is required for personal use such as taking a kid to school or someone else shopping for a ride and this is valid for 20 years or until 50 years of age.
  • Commercial driving licence is essential to have to transport goods by a medium good vehicle or a heavy goods vehicle and this is valid for the 3 years.
  • International driving licence is required to drive in foreign lands or abroad and it is only valid for a year. 

The procedure to apply for a driving licence by online is mentioned below:

  • First you have to visit the official website of sarathi.parivahan.gov.in.
  • You just need to provide Form 4 and fill in all the required details such as a proof, address proof. 
  • Then choose your state.
  • Choose the option of licence type.
  • Complete the application form and submit it.
  • Upload your relevant documents.
  • Then pay the fee for your application process.
  • Verify the payment status.
  • After completing all the previous steps click on the submit button. 
  • Then you can visit the RTO on the scheduled date with the original documents and fee slip.

Eligibility criteria for Driving Licence

If you is eligible for the driving licence you must have:

  • An applicant should be of 18 years and above to get a permanent driving licence.
  • Apply for the Commercial driving licence, the applicant age should be above 20 years.
  • The applicant should apply for a driving licence after the 30 days of getting a learning licence and within 180 days from the date of the issue of learner’s licence. 
  • The applicant must be well- versed with the traffic rules and regulations.
  • Applicants must have a learning licence.  

You must have a following documents:

  • Application for licence to drive a vehicle Form 4.
  • Learner’s licence.
  • Fitness certificate for transport vehicles. 
  • You must have a three copies of recent photographs
  • Proof of a residence such as Voter’s ID, passport or Life Insurance Policy.
  • Proof of the age such as Birth Certificate, School Certificate or Passport.
  • Payslip issued by the State Government or Central Government.
