Gautam Gambhir, the former opener, has been named the men’s cricket team’s new head coach by India. Following an impressive campaign for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, he will succeed Rahul Dravid. Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, made the announcement on social media on Tuesday, July 9.

On Tuesday, July 9, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced that Gautam Gambhir has been named the senior India Men’s team head coach. Starting on July 27, the 42-year-old’s first assignment will be the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. 

Dravid, who held the position from November 2021 to June 2024, was replaced by Gambhir.India advanced to the 2023 ICC World Test Championship final and the 2024 T20 World Cup final under Dravid’s leadership. The 50-over World Cup was also won by the nation.

Although Gambhir hasn’t coached before, he has been a mentor for several IPL teams, most notably Kolkata Knight Riders, who were champions this year. He also participated in the Indian teams that won the World Cup in 2007 and 2011.

What the Shah said in the statement released by the BCCI?

Shah wrote, “I am really happy to announce Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian Cricket Team.” Gautam has seen firsthand how quickly the game of cricket has changed in the modern era. 

I have no doubt that Gautam is the best person to lead Indian cricket forward because he has persevered through hardship and succeeded in a variety of roles throughout his career. 

His extensive experience and distinct vision for Team India put him in an ideal position to assume this thrilling and highly sought-after coaching position. As he sets out on this new adventure, the BCCI is behind him wholeheartedly. Gambhir has proven to be an astute strategist and a tough competitor. 

We think he’ll approach his position as head coach with the same perseverance and leadership. It is a logical progression for him to take on the position of head coach, and I am confident he is going to bring out the absolute best in our players.

What was Gambhir’s statement after appointed as a new head coach?

Regarding his appointment, Gambhir wrote on X, saying, “Serving my country has been the greatest honor of my life.” India is my identity. It’s an honor to be back, even though my hat has changed. 

But I still want to make every Indian proud, just like I always have. The dreams of 1.4 billion Indians are carried by the men in blue, and I will stop at nothing to see that these dreams are realized.

He also said that  “My passion is cricket and I am excited to collaborate closely with the BCCI, Head of Cricket, support staff, and above all, the players as we strive for success in the forthcoming tournaments.”

Gautam Gambhir Early Life & Education 

Born in New Delhi, Gambhir is the son of Deepak Gambhir, a textile business manager, and Seema Gambhir, a homemaker. The family is Punjabi Hindu Khatri. Eighteen days after his birth, Gambhir’s maternal grandparents adopted him, and he has lived with them ever since.

When Gambhir was ten years old, he began playing cricket. He attended Modern School in New Delhi for his education and chose not to pursue a degree. Raju Tandon and Sanjay Bharadwaj served as Gambhir’s coaches.

Gambhir was selected in Bangalore for National Cricket Academy’s inaugural class in 2000. Gambhir married Natasha Jain, part of a well-known business family, in October 2011.
