Malaysia VEP Registration – Eligibility & Required Documents for Vehicle Entry Permit!

Malaysia transport minister Anthony Loke made the announcement on Tuesday, when he explained that  any foreign motor vehicle without a VEP entering or travelling in Malaysia from that date may be fined or jailed for six months.

Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is a permit issued by the Road Transport Department that allows the entry of foreign vehicles into Malaysia. Owners or representatives duly appointed by the owners of all foreign registered vehicles entering in Malaysia are required to register online for VEP through Portal. 

For your convenience they are adopting a self declaration approach whereby you are required to duly provide accurate and complete information about the vehicles and the corresponding owners. To save your time by filling in the registration web form, you may upload the vehicle registration card PDF file obtained from the land transport authority. 

If you choose to register physical at the counter in CIQ or at the premise designated by JPJ, you are required to fill in a physical form and provide the following supporting documentation:

  • Vehicle Registration Card issued by the relevant authority
  • Current Insurance Cover Note
  • Vehicle Owners Passport
  • Driver’s Passport
  • Authorisation letter

How to Apply for VEP?

There are steps to apply for the VEP registration in Malaysia:

  • The owner of the vehicle or a representative appointed by the owner, must register online by the Road Traffic Department official website.
  • Then put your details including a login identity and password.
  • After this you will receive confirmation by email and directed to the VEP portal to complete the registration process.
  • Before the next process you must have downloaded and registered your Touch N, Go eWallet account.
  • The eWallet can be downloaded from your mobile phone application or another application store. 
  • After login to the portal you will need to submit documents including your motor insurance, a copy of NRIC as well as certificate of entitlement. 
  • Once the application is approved you will receive an email notification to choose your method of collecting the VEP RFID tag either self collect centre. 
  • After making your pick, you will need to make a payment online by credit card.
  • Once you receive your RFID tag, you need to perform tag acknowledgement by login into the VEP portal and click the acknowledgement button on your vehicle number. 
  • Once attached a photo of the tag with your car registration number in the frame then upload the image on the VEP portal. 

Who is eligible for Malaysia VEP Registration?

The Owners of all the categories of foreign vehicles including private and commercial ones are required to register for a VEP before entering Malaysia. This latest update refers specifically to the permit issued by the Malaysia Road Transport Department that regulates the entry for foreign vehicles into Malaysia. 

According to the section 66H of Malaysia Road Transport Act 1987, it is mandatory that all the foreign registered vehicles entering Malaysia be registered for the VEP, with the exception of the motorcycle, all VEP registered foreign vehicles will be a non transferable VEP tags, which contain pertinent information that identifies.

The VEP was first announced in 2017 and on this day itself the Malaysia minister announced that it was halting enforcement as a result of teething problems at the border, before over a week later with the news that the VEP would be delayed by at least a year. 

Documents you need during the Malaysia VEP Registration

You must have these documents when you driving into Malaysia:

  • You must have a Passport with at least 6 months of validity.
  • Your MySejahtera app has been registered and activated. 
  • You must have at least a basic vehicle for registration. 
  • You must have a category of vehicles covering private vehicles, commercial vehicles and embassy government owned vehicles.
  •  Complete a full regimen of a covid 19 vaccine recognised by the WHO.
  • Children aged 12 or below will be allowed to enter Malaysia without the need to show the proof of vaccination.
  • Those aged 60 and above are required to get a third dose of the vaccination with proof.
  • Touch n, Go or EZ-Link and Touch n, Go card that has sufficient balance to pay.
  • You must have a valid VEP RFID tag on your vehicle. 
  • Travel insurance with a minimum coverage of $20,000. 
  • You must have address proof documents for receiving the VEP.
