When is tax season 2025? Internal Revenue Service Tax Filing Date!

As we are heading toward the end of the 2024 year, taxpayers must be wondering about the 2025 IRS tax season deadlines. The IRS has released the  Tax Calendars for 2025, the individual taxpayers can check the deadline for the 2025 tax season to manage their taxes on time. 

When is tax season 2025?

The US tax season for individual tax filers will begin on 15 January 2025. The Individual taxpayers can make their estimated 2024 tax payment on 15 Jan. The individuals who don’t need to pay the income tax through withholding can use Form 1040-ES and the taxpayers who pay the taxes in installments should pay their taxes by 31 Jan 2025. 

The tax season ends on the tax day, 15 April 2025, before which the taxpayers should file their tax returns to avoid any legal consequences and complete their tax liability. The IRS has set the lowest tax rate for single individuals with income above $11,925 or less and $23,850 for couples filing jointly. 

The earliest day to file the tax return for the 2024 tax year is 15 Jan, however, the last date can be different for certain people who meet certain conditions, such as people affected by disaster or people who file extensions. Taxpayers should mark the deadline to ensure they fulfill their tax responsibilities on time. 

Extended Tax Deadlines for some States due to Hurricane Helene 

Several US states have faced Hurricane Helene recently, and seeing the disaster, the IRS has announced the tax deadline extension for the people living in the affected States. Hurricane Helene began on 05 Oct 2025 and many states were affected by the storm and strong winds. 

According to the IRS, the federal tax extension deadline is applicable to affected US states, such as North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, and parts of Florida. According to the IRS notice, the 01 May 2025 tax deadline is applicable based on the following conditions:

  • The individual, tax-exempt, or C Corporation that has filed the valid extension for the 2023 tax year, however, the tax payments should be made timely as they were due before the Hurricane occurred. 
  • Businesses and individual tax filers who have taxes to pay for the tax year 2024. 
  • The quarterly estimated payments for the 2024 tax year are due on 15 Jan 2025, and normal estimated tax payments are due on tax day. 
  • The quarterly payroll and excise tax returns that are generally due on 31 Oct 2024, 31 Jan 2025, and 30 Apr 2025 can be paid on the applicable deadline. The excise and quarterly payroll taxes are due on or after 05 Oct 2024 but before 21 Oct 2024, their amount will be reduced as they would have naturally paid to the agency.

How To File Tax Returns via Direct Filers?

Earlier this year, the IRS has allowed Direct File under the pilot plan to see the Direct file success in filing tax returns timely and easily. The success of the Direct file has led the agency to announce in Oct 2024 that the Direct File will be available in 24 US States, from which 12 States are the pilot states and the agency has added the new 12 states in the Direct File model. 

The IRS Direct File is the fastest convenient method to file tax returns, however, in the states where this method is still unavailable, they can file their tax return through the traditional available method.

Taxpayers can use the IRS Direct File tool easily online by logging into their IRS Direct File account with an ID.me username and password. The tool is easy to navigate and use, the taxpayers can use the tool after verifying their identity.  

The taxpayers can use the IRS direct File to report W-2 wage income, SSA-1099, 1099-R retirement income, 1099-INT interest income, 1099-G unemployment compensation, and other credits & deductions. 

After you file your tax return timely, you can expect your tax refund within 21 days of your filing the return if you have selected the direct deposit method or 30 days for paper check depending on your local mailing service. 

The 2025 season is just three months away, and the taxpayers who pay quarterly estimated payments should complete their tax liability on time, taxpayers who will pay annual taxes should mark the tax season deadline and check if they live in the areas where the deadline is extended.
