Significance of this year’s Hanuman Jayanti

After a very long time, this year an amazing coincidence is happening on Lord Hanuman’s birthday. The birthday or Janamotsav of Lord Hanuman falls on Tuesday this year, a day which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman only. 

According to Hindu beliefs, Saturdays and Tuesdays are dedicated to Lord Hanuman, devotees around the globe worship Lord Hanuman on this day. 

Hence, his birthday falling on Tuesday holds great importance for devotees as it will be more auspicious to seek the blessing of Lord Hanuman on this day. 

Lord Hanuman is the avatar of Lord Shiva and he signifies strength, devotion, and knowledge. The devotees who worship him, recite Hanuman Chalisa, and chant mantras on this day get the blessings of the Lord Hanuman. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Hanuman was born to Vanar Maharaj Kesari of Sumeru and his Queen Anjana. Queen Anjana was an Apsara of heaven who was cursed to be born on earth. The curse would be lifted after she gave birth to a child, so Queen Anjana worshiped and did penance for Lord Shiva for 12 years. 

Lord Hanuman was born after Lord Shiva’s blessings when the Lord of Wind blessed the womb of Queen Anjana with Lord Shiva’s divine powers. For this reason, Lord Hanuman is also known as the son of Lord Wind and his birthday is marked as a celestial celebration.

Rituals to follow on Hanuman Jayanti 

The devotees who are going celebrate the festival for the first time can follow the following rituals to seek blessings from Lord Hanuman:

  • Recite the names of Lord Rama and Sita along with Lord Hanuman on the night before Hanuman Jayanti. 
  • Take a bath before sunrise, if possible, and pledge to observe a fast on the day by taking GangaJal in your hand.
  • People wear yellow on this day as it is auspicious to wear this color on the day. 
  • Now, worship Lord Hanuman, light a ghee or jasmine oil lamp, offer a garland of Chameli flowers, and recite Hanuman Chalisa. 
  • In Prasad, you can offer Bundi laddus or jaggery to Lord Hanuman. 
  • In the evening, perform the Arti of Lord Hanuman and distribute the prasad. 
  • People often donate clothes, money, and food to the needy on this day to celebrate the birthday of Lord Hanuman.

Celebration of Lord Hanuman’s Birthday

The birthday of Lord Hanuman is celebrated at various places in India with extreme joy and full enthusiasm.  Devotees of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrate Hanuman Jayanti for 41 days starting from Chaitra Purnima to the tenth day of Krishna Paksha.

People from various states or regions celebrate Hanuman’s birthday at different times according to their beliefs, like in Tamil Nadu, people celebrate Hanuman Jayanti around January or December. 

On Hanuman Jayanti, many temples and groups organize Sundar Kand, bhajan, or kirtan, and perform various rituals to celebrate the day our deity was born on earth. 

It would be great to refer to the day as Hanuman Janamotsav instead of Jayanti, as Lord Hanuman is believed to be present on Earth. So, devotees get ready to celebrate the symbol of devotion and courage of a Vanar, Lord Hanuman on 23 April 2024.
