History Behind Eid Ul-Fitr

According to Islamic beliefs, Eid was first celebrated in 624 AD by the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. People celebrate the blessing of the Quran and express their gratitude towards Allah. 

The festival was initiated in Medinas when the Islamic Prophet Mohammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina. According to Islamic beliefs, when the prophet arrived at Medina, he saw people celebrating two days where they celebrated the lord and formed a spiritual connection with the lord. 

It is believed that Prophet Hazrat Muhammad won the Battle of Badr against the Meccan Quraysh tribe, which became the turning point of the Islamic religion and the greatest Islamic victory in history.

Since then, people have celebrated this victory and the success of the Prophet by distributing sweets and cooking a variety of delicacies.

Eid Ul-Fitr Significance 

As we mentioned earlier, Eid Ul-Fitr indicates the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan month. Ramadan holds great significance among the Muslim community as it commemorates the blessing of the Quran on the devotees. 

Ramadan month resonates with the five pillars of Islam – Zakat,  Shahada, Sawn, Salat, and Haji that Muslims follow diligently during this month.

The day of Eid Ul-Fitr celebrations begins with joy and full fervor among the people who follow Islam.  People follow the below traditions and rituals to celebrate the festival:

  • The day of Eid Ul-Fitr begins with a holy bath and offering a special prayer, Salat al-Eid. 
  • The Muslims gather at the mosque and offer namaz to Allah in the morning. 
  • People wear new clothes on the day of Eid Ul-Fitr and hud each other to wish Eid Mubarak. 
  • People make sweet dishes at home, especially vermicelli, to spread sweetness in their family and life.
  • People meet up on this day and offer sweets to each other. 
  • People decorate their homes and follow a belief to get rid of any negativity on this day. Many people promise to leave their one bad habit of theirs on the day to Allah. 
  • In some places, people also go to fairs organized on the occasion of Eid and enjoy it with their family.
  • The day people encourage each other to forgive and seek forgiveness from each other and celebrate the day with each other without any grudges.
  • At night, people eat Eid dinner and relish the variety of foods with their loved ones. 
  • The younger members of families lined up in front of adult members to receive their Eidi or gifts or money on the occasion of Eid. 

The way of celebration may vary from region to region but the core value of Islam is the same for everyone who follows Islam and celebrates this day. The festival celebrates the unity and beauty of Islam.
