Panguni Uthiram is associated with the divine couple Lord Shiva & Goddess Parvati and their son, Lord Muruga. It’s an auspicious day for Tamil Hindus and celebrated all over the globe by the Tamilians. 

According to the Tamil Calendar, the day is observed in the month of Panguni, when Nakshatra Uthiram comes ahead. In north India, it is commonly known as Uttara Phalguni Nakshatra. In the Tamil calendar, Panguni is the last month of the calendar.

Significance of of Panguni Uthiram

According to the Hindu text, the full moon coincides with Nakshatra Uthiram on Panguni Uthiram. 

On this day, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lord Muruga or Lord Kartikeya, got married to Goddess Devasena, the daughter of Lord Indra. It is also recognized as the same day when Lord Shiva and the daughter of Himvan Goddess Parvati got married.  

The day signifies many divine marriages and is celebrated to commemorate them, such as Lord Murugan and Goddess Devsena, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, Lord Ranganatha and Andal.

According to the holy text Skanda Purana, Panguni Uthiram fast is one of the eight mahaVratas. It is mentioned in the holy scriptures with the name Kalyana Vrata.

The devotees observe fast on this day to get blessings from the gods. The day is special to get divine blessings for a happy and prosperous married life. 

On this day, we also commemorate the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi from the Samudra Manthan that happened between Gods and Demons. We also call the day Mahalakshmi Jayanti due to this occurrence. 

The day also marks Lord Ayyappan Jayanthi as we celebrate the birth of Lord Ayyapan, son of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu’s Mohini avatar. 

Therefore, Panguni Uthiram holds great importance among Tamil Hindu traditions and customs. The day is celebrated with full enthusiasm and joy at various corners of the globe by the devotees.

Rituals & Practices of Panguni Uthiram 2024

On the auspicious day, the devotees performed various rituals to get the divine blessing of Lord Murugan, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, and all the other gods associated with the day.

 If you are celebrating the Panguni Uthiram this year for the first time, make sure you follow the following religious practices and rituals:

  • On Uthiram Nakshatra, the devotees get up early and take a holy bath. They worship Lord Shiva, Lord Muruga, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Parvati, etc. mainly Lord Murugan. 
  • It is believed that millions of devotees take baths in the Tumburu Tirtha, which is one of the seven sacred tanks of Venkateshwara Temple in Tirupati. 
  • The devotees observed a fast on the day and ate one meal a day with only sattvic food.
  • Unmarried people also observe the fast on this day to get their desired partner.  
  • The devotees of Lord Murugan carry their physical burden in the form of Kavadi to Lord Murugan’s temples. The kavadi is a form of sacrifice that is offered to the god of war Lord Murugan. 
  • People decorate the Lord and goddesses and perform the marriage between them. The marriage feast is organized at many temples, people take the prasad as a blessing from the divine couple.  
  • The devotees who have kept fast the next day donate the idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to another follower of Lord Shiva. 

Celebration of Panguni Uthiram

Panguni Uthiram, when we celebrate the marriages of various gods, holds great importance in Hindu religions. The devotees performed many rituals and worshiped Lord Murugan and other Lords associated with the day to get the divine blessings of a peaceful and happy life. 

In Tamil Nadu at Ekambeshwar Temple in Kanchipuram, the festival is observed for 13 days, where people worship Lord Shiva and seek blessings from the supreme power. 

It is believed that Gowri the form of Goddess Parvati got married to Lord Shiva in Kanchipuram, that’s why the Kanchipuram temple is a sight to see on Panguni Uthiram celebration.  

Panguni Uthiram festival will fall on 24 March this year, the day commemorates the divine marriages of our Lords and Goddesses. The day becomes one of the auspicious days for Hindu followers.
