One of the main reasons the 2024 Valero Texas Open is an enjoyable stop on the PGA Tour is its schedule placement. For the Valero Texas Open, the PGA Tour relocated to TPC San Antonio while it was still in Texas.

It was the penultimate chance to secure a spot for the Masters for people not in the lineup next week at Augusta National, resulting in the winner receiving a berth. Akshay Bhatia utilized to benefit from the situation, however he had to work extra to do it.

At one point on Sunday in the final round, the 22-year-old was up six shots, but Denny McCarthy who was aiming for his first win on the PGA Tour made eight birdies on the final nine holes to finish with a 63.

In actuality, Bhatia had to win the playoff by making a birdie putt on the final hole to shoot 67 and advance. McCarthy’s third ball found the water on the opening hole giving Bhatia the victory. Bhatia will now compete in his first Masters and second major competition.

The prize money for the 2024 Valero Texas Open winner is $1.656 million. This equates to 18% of the $9.2 million purse up for grabs this week at TPC San Antonio, which is the standard on the PGA Tour.
